The Process
Materials and Finishes

In house design and manufacture: we manufacture your furniture in our own workshop using sustainable plywoods and hardwoods.

Design
We take your initial brief and work closely with you to create a solution that often goes beyond the one that you were expecting. We use computer aided visualization to show your project in detail and to give you the confidence to move on to the manufacturing stage.

Manufacture
We produce a detailed set of manufacturing drawings for the workshop where your furniture is machined using our digital manufacturing techniques along with traditional wood working machinery to make your design to a high level of accuracy. The elements are hand sanded, assembled and usually finished with several coats of hard wax oil to create a durable and hard wearing finish.

Installation
We always make a detailed survey before starting your project and an integral part of our service is to carefully install your furniture. We pride ourselves in making the installation phase as short as possible with the furniture being pre-assembled in the workshop minimizing the disruption to your home or business.

Materials and finishes

We use carefully selected sustainable materials and natural finishes in our designs . Below is a description of the key materials and finishes that we work with.

Plywood

Much of our fitted furniture is constructed from European FSC certified birch plywood, often with a hardwood veneer, such as oak or walnut.  This high quality material allows us to use a range of jointing techniques and details that wouldn’t be possible in lower quality board materials. It is extremely strong and gives us more scope to explore innovative designs for our furniture.

Three Layer Timber Panels / Tri Ply

When a minimal, modern aesthetic is combined with the richness of solid wood we use Tri Ply, a board material that has thick planks of 3.6 mm solid wood laminated to each side of the wood or plywood core. The look is identical to a solid wood panel but it has the stability and strength of plywood and is ideally suited to cabinet doors and large panels.

Solid Wood

We use European hardwoods on a range of projects including sideboards and tables where its true qualities can be fully used both visually and practically. We only use FSC certifed European varieties.

Forbo Furniture Linoleum

Furniture Linoleum is a unique surfacing material that we apply to furniture such as desks, stools, cabinets and doors. This natural surface material is available in a range of deep and dense colours, it is renowned for its elegance and durability and is made of natural, sustainable ingredientsThe linoleum has a matt look and feels warm to the touch, with an earthy, solid quailty to it. We think this material complements all the qualities of our furniture.

Finishes

Below is a description of the key finishes that we work with.

Osmo Hardwax Oil

We have been using Osmo oils for over 20 years. We hand apply the oil in several coats to the furniture, giving a long lasting durable finish. Using Hardwax oil the surfaces can be easily renovated at any time without the need for sanding. The foundation of Osmo wood finishes is based upon purified and refined natural resources which are carefully harvested natural oils and hard waxes. The wood remains microporous and continues to absorb and release water without damage. The surface can breathe and becomes anti-static, which attracts less dust and dirt.

Farrow & Ball Paint

Farrow & Ball paint is renowned for its depth and complexity, the paint responds to all types of light to bring your surfaces to life. These qualities as well as it being an eco friendly paint are why we have used Farrow and Ball paint for many years and why it is specified by many architects and clients that we work with.
