We were commissioned by the client to design and make a modern staircase storage wall that incorporated a study area and bookcase in their newly built house. Our main concept was to make a storage wall that did not look constrained or limited by the stairs behind. We achieved this by creating the look of a full height storage wall with a central open shelf element that was recessed into the wall to the stairs and could therefore extend above and below the stair structure. The full height doors concealed the sloping storage compartments that have full depth drawers.

A sliding door was incorporated into the design to close off the stairs to reduce sound transmission to the upper floors and to keep the cooking smells on the ground floor. This large door is flush with the storage wall when open and conceals a large storage space at the foot of the stairs for a giant bean bag for use in the garden. It has subsequently also become a play space for the clients two young daughters!

The study space appears recessed into the end of the storage wall as it concealed by a full height fixed panel next to the main run of doors. The study was designed as a bookcase with a pull down desk that has a Desktop lino surface on each side.

The materials used were oak faced particle board for the cabinets and oak faced birch plywood for the drawers hand finished with Osmo Polyx oil. The doors were MDF painted with Farrow and Ball De Nimmes.

As well as the modern staircase storage wall we designed and built a long wall hung sideboard in the same style and materials for records, books and media equipment.
